Location and Climate

Riga’s geographical position has always played an important role in the city’s development. It occupies a strategic position on an international scale, as Riga is located:

  •     in the centre of the three Baltic States;
  •     by the Baltic Sea;
  •     in an EU country bordering Russia and Belarus.

The city’s climate is moderately warm and damp, and is strongly influenced by the temperate air streams (cyclones) of the Atlantic Ocean and the Baltic Sea. The Sea air streams dominate 220 – 230 days per year and therefore summers are relatively cool and cloudy (more than 40% of days each year are cloudy), while winters are rather mild with a lot of thaws (up to 10 days per month). Riga’s location by the sea gives it a mild maritime climate which makes it popular for recreation and resorts.
